I got this scar when I was 11 years old during summer vacation. My mom and I were on our family friend Val's boat on the Tennessee River. I was swimming a few feet behind the boat when all of a sudden, my foot hit something. I immediately stopped treading water and went under. When I resurfaced, my mother saw that all of the blood had drained out of my face. She called out to me and asked me what was wrong, but I couldn't answer her. I went to the side of the boat and climbed the ladder. I remember looking down at my foot and seeing inside exposed: the white skin, the bone, and both sides of a vein. Then it started bleeding. Val was completely nauseated - she had never had kids and wasn't prepared for normal childhood injuries. They patched me up with the first aid kit on the boat and we sent to the hospital a few hours later, when it became apparent that butterfly bandages weren't good enough for the job.
Apparently I had kicked the boat propeller. Six stitches and five hours later, my foot was stitched up quite nicely. In all, the original cut was 3 inches long; the scar is only an inch and a half.
