In February of 2001, I was 18, and my grandma was in her last phase of life, comatose from the lymphoma affecting her brain. I had watched her deterioration from the beginning and had seen everything progress from bad to worse, and it wasn't until two days before she died that I was able to spend time alone with her.
I sat by her bed and took her cool hand in mine. Her breathing was very shallow and every now and then her fingers would twitch (which I convinced myself was her way of communicating).
I told her that I loved her and that we were all okay. I told her that I would miss her, but that it was okay for her to go.
