1. My parents are finally divorced after a many-year custody battle.
2. I am given the worst perm ever for my 12th birthday (I begged to be allowed to get one). My friend Kim - who had curly hair - took a day off school the day before my birthday to get one done. My dad said she "stole my thunder."
3. I start a new school and realize while taking the city bus there, wearing my ice blue shirt, turquoise and black vest and black leather tie, that feelings are useless; that life will be much easier for me without them. So I stopped having them. For two decades.
4. I become fascinated by small-p politics after meeting Pierre Trudeau, watching the convention that made John Turner briefly prime minister and then the landslide election of Brian Mulroney to that post. I wonder why it is more people are not involved in their communities and why politicians are treated with reviled reverence when they do not deserve such pedestals and if the two are somehow combined. Yes, I was an obnoxious 12-year-old.
