1. Michaela D., a 15-year-old Parisian girl, lived with my family in Huntsville, Alabama for the month of July, and I hated her.
2. Michaela spent the whole month she was with us looking for slip-on checkerboard Vans shoes for her Parisian boyfriend, and no one in my family had ever seen or heard of them.
3. Madison Square Mall opened on the outskirts of Huntsville and Michaela insisted that my mom and I take her to its grand opening because Miss America Suzette Charles, who had just taken over for the deposed Vanessa Williams, was making an appearance.
4. I had a huge girl-crush on Olympic gymnast Julianne McNamara.
5. I had a huge crush on Chris L., my JROTC company commander, who drove a 1974 Ford Mustang II (the license plate number of which I still remember 24 years later [47G7211]) and wore a gray Members Only jacket and sucked in air between his clenched teeth when he laughed.
